The University of Waterloo's Hyperloop Pod Competition Team

What is Hyperloop?

The Hyperloop is a proposed supersonic train line stretching across the country in underground airless tubes. We believe that it's the future of transportation, and an example of how sound engineering can overcome any problem.

What is Waterloop?

We represent Canada in the SpaceX Hyperloop Competition, a university competition to build the fastest and safest half-scale Hyperloop prototype. In the future, we hope to build one of the first full-scale passenger Hyperloops in the world, right here in Canada.


 

THE CHALLENGE

This project is the response by a group of dedicated University of Waterloo students to the SpaceX Hyperloop pod challenge to independently design and build a prototype Hyperloop pod to be tested on a one-mile test track in Hawthorne, California.

Since it's inception, our team has come a long way - competing in Competition I, SpaceX Design Week, and numerous tech and industry events, all in anticipation of making our way to Hawthorne, California for SpaceX Competition II in August 2017.

Enter Goose II: our fully re-designed Hyperloop pod prototype -faster and lighter than ever.

The Goose II Hyperloop Pod is designed for simplicity and high speed operations. Using a hybrid electric-pneumatic movement system, the pod can navigate with no contact along the track in a vacuum environment. Building upon the Goose I design, the pod now 120kg lighter, includes on board propulsion and is much simpler to fabricate and assemble.
The magnetic wheel system allows lateral stability, linear acceleration and braking. The levitation system uses air caster technology with passive shock absorber suspension. The  shell is a sleek lightweight fibreglass construction complimented by an all Aluminum frame. The eddy current brakes allow for a failsafe reliable and contact free braking phase.

Welcome to GOOSE I

Our prototype design uses a minimalist style while retaining strict safety considerations. By selecting this design philosophy, a reduction in the manufacturing complexity, cost and mass is achieved, while simultaneously permitting an effective travel speed and increased reliability. Our attempt to build the pod with off-the-shelf components throughout the system allows for it to be scalable to full size and to reduce cost. Furthermore, the flexibility inherent in such a modular design allows for additional functionality and aesthetic flourishes to be included without significantly impacting the pod’s core functions.

Enter GOOSE X: our newly re-designed concept pod that imagines the passenger vehicle of the future.

The GOOSE X is our conceptual Hyperloop passenger vehicle design which illustrates what a Hyperloop vehicle will one day look like, once the technology is ready for passenger use. This full-scale design won't be built for many more years, but is directly derived from the pod we are building for the SpaceX pod competition.
